Family Medicine
About the department
There is a full time family physician at the hospital, as well as an emergency medicine specialist and a part time British trained GP who cover casualty, assist with general OPD and cover 4 of the 14 rural primary health care clinics between 20 and 45km from the hospital.
Training
It may be possible to join a registrar programme in Family Medicine via Wits University or the University of Pretoria at Tintswalo, depending on demand. It should also be possible to do one’s Diploma in Primary Emergency Care at Tintswalo now that we have a specialist in emergency medicine at Tintswalo.
Small groups of final year medical students from Wits University and the University of Pretoria have been rotating through Tintswalo for their 6 week family medicine block. In addition the 5th year (GEMP3) medical class from Wits University rotates through Tintswalo in groups of 10-14 for a 10 day Public Health/ Community Orientated Primary Care block every 2 weeks.
